The game changer is rolling: Volvo Cars today started production of the new, fully electric Volvo EX60, with customer deliveries starting from mid-2026 and South Africa firmly in the picture as global order books continue to grow.

The fully electric mid-size SUV is built at Volvo Carsmanufacturing plant in Torslanda and represents a landmark moment for the brand: the EX60 is the first fully electric car to be designed, developed, and built in Sweden.

For South African drivers, the EX60 arrives at a pivotal moment. As energy confidence grows and the conversation shifts from "if" to "which one," the EX60 makes a compelling case for itself. It delivers class-leading range[1] of up to 810km. Thats enough to cover the Johannesburg-to-Durban corridor on a single charge. It also charges[2] from 10% to 80% in just 16 minutes. For a country built on long distances, those numbers matter. Read more about the EX60 here.

The EX60 is positioning itself as a premium yet accessible entry point into full electric mobility for buyers already considering the XC60 T8. Strong demand has already prompted Volvo Cars to increase EX60 production volumes for 2026, with retail orders in key European markets coming in considerably higher than internal forecasts. Order books for additional markets, including the United States and Asia, open later this spring.

Today is an important milestone for our company, as we start to build the first EX60 customer cars,” said Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo Cars CEO.We are now focused on a steady ramp-up of high-quality EX60 production, making sure this game-changing car will be a profitable growth driver in the coming years.”

The Torslanda plant has been significantly upgraded in preparation for EX60 production, with an investment of around SEK 10 billion (approximately R24 billion) including mega casting capabilities, a new battery assembly plant, and a fully refurbished paint shop and final assembly facility. Such is the global appetite for the EX60 that Volvo Cars plans to keep the Torslanda plant running for an extra week over the European summer, a first in the factory's history, and a telling measure of just how much the world is ready for this car.
