- More than 10 000 double-cab Ranger’s registered in first half of the year; coming in ahead competitors in second (7 887) and third position (4 415)
- The Ford Ranger has topped the double-cab segment every year since 2023, securing the title for a third consecutive full year in 2025 with 20 857 units sold (+3,9% year-on-year), and is on pace to extend that streak through 2026
- Consumers continue to show strong demand for a locally built vehicle that supports all aspects of their daily lives. With 10 075 double-cab delivered to Ford owners during the first half of 2026, the Ford Ranger enters the second half of the year as South Africa’s double-cab sales leader and a compelling choice for customers seeking one vehicle for business, family life and adventure, supported by an ownership experience designed to go the distance.
PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA, 14 August 2026 – “South Africa’s iconic Ford Ranger has continued to reinforce its position as South Africa’s most popular double-cab bakkie, delivering category leadership in this segment across the first six months of 2026. This now marks over three years of segment leadership for the locally built Ranger.
According to the latest sales data from Lightstone Auto and additional registration data published by Cars.co.za, 10 075 Ranger double-cab units were registered and delivered to Ford owners between January and June this year. The result continues the Silverton-built Ranger’s strong sales momentum after it secured South Africa’s double-cab sales crown for a third consecutive year in 2025.
“The Ranger's continued leadership in the double-cab segment is a clear endorsement of what South African customers are asking for: a vehicle that delivers genuine bakkie capability alongside the comfort and technology they expect from a modern passenger vehicle. Ranger delivers the capability expected from a bakkie, while proving the comfort, technology and versatility required for modern life not a compromise for tough. The Ford Ranger is equally at home supporting a business, transporting a family or enabling a weekend adventure. What’s important is this isn't a single strong month or a single strong year. It's a four-year pattern of South Africans choosing a Ford Ranger double-cab as the one vehicle that has to work for business, family and weekends,” says Ryan Searle, Director of Sales Operations, Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (Manufacturing) (Pty) Ltd.
“South Africans' love for the double cab bakkie runs far deeper than practicality alone. Bakkies are rooted in a national identity that blends work and lifestyle into one single offering. This dual-purpose demand means owners expect a vehicle to possess the structural integrity to handle demanding work, while offering the refinement expected of a modern (dare I say luxury) passenger vehicle,” he says.
Double-cab derivatives accounted for approximately 80,4% of the 12 522 overall Ford Ranger registrations recorded during the first half of 2026.
Built by South African hands at the world’s best quality Ranger plant
The Ford Ranger is manufactured at Ford's Silverton Manufacturing Plant in Pretoria, one of the company's key global production facilities, and its double-cab leadership reflects directly on the plant's workforce, local suppliers and dealer network.
"This result belongs to our employees, our suppliers, our dealers, and the customers who keep choosing the Ford Ranger," Searle says. "It's proof that a locally built product can lead a highly competitive, closely watched segment year after year."
The Silverton Assembly Plant was recently named the number one quality plant in the global Ford manufacturing ecosystem. “This reflects true South African excellence, and it’s a key part of why our people and our customers are both choosing Ranger first,” says Searle.
“A beautiful bakkie that doesn't work is frustrating. A functional bakkie with no soul is forgettable. What owners are really searching for, whether they'd put it in these words or not, is the vehicle that gets both right: capability that performs, wrapped in a driving experience that makes them feel something every time they climb behind the wheel. In a country defined by stark contrasts, this embeds a profound psychological safety net for owners, transforming the vehicle from a depreciating machine into a technically superior, technology heavy and trusted partner; that for many is a genuine object of pride,” he says.
