- SVI launches MAX Recon 6x6 tactical vehicle
- Military vehicle built for rapid deployment
- Flexible design with weapons integration
- Various configurations currently available
SVI Engineering, leading specialist manufacturer of armoured products in South Africa, has officially revealed the menacing new SVI MAX Recon, a rapid-deployment 6x6 tactical version of the mighty MAX 3, which itself is based on Toyota’s proven Land Cruiser 70 Series chassis.
Though this military-spec vehicle isn’t available to the general public – requiring special end-user certificates to purchase – it nevertheless shows what is possible with the Land Cruiser platform, featuring not only a 6x6 upgrade but also adaptable ballistic protection and, of course, various weapon mounts. In short, it’s the ultimate apocalypse-ready Land Cruiser.
So, why was this vehicle developed? Well, in recent times, it’s become clear that the modern battlefield demands speed, adaptability and firepower. The SVI MAX Recon has been designed to meet these precise requirements. It’s a five-seater military vehicle built for rapid deployment, fast reaction, deep infiltration and sustained battlefield support.
ADVANCED 6x6 CONVERSION
Based on the Land Cruiser 70 Series platform, the rugged MAX Recon furthermore benefits from SVI’s proven 6x6 conversion. Upgraded from the base vehicle’s standard two axles to three, the vehicle is able to accommodate the added weight that comes with various military applications.
This upgrade not only greatly increases its carrying capacity but also further improves off-road performance, a factor that is crucial to effectively overcoming the varied terrain of the battlefield.
- Selectable modes: 6x2, 6x4 or full 6x6 engagement.
- Bogie suspension system: Ensures superior off-road performance and stability.
- Heavy-duty rear differentials: Locally manufactured casings replace the standard units, while retaining Toyota components for ease of maintenance.
- Through-drive rear differential: Provides seamless power distribution across all axles.
ADAPTABLE PROTECTION
Equipped with Level B6 armour (including for the engine bay and firewall as well as for the roof, the latter providing protection against drone attacks), the MAX Recon furthermore comes with a split windscreen featuring B6-grade glass. Each section of the windscreen can be folded flat when required, while the co-driver’s dedicated weapon mount allows for direct forward firing, maximising frontal combat capability.
A turret-mounting interface is integrated into the roof, while each door aperture features a weapon mount and a composite half-door, the latter complete with quick-release hinges for rapid removal. The vehicle can be closed with a canvas cover for lighter missions or fitted with full armoured doors when higher protection levels are required.
VARIOUS CONFIGURATIONS AVAILABLE
SVI’s engineers designed the MAX Recon to be modular in order to allow rapid adaptation to diverse operational requirements. Current configurations include:
- Reconnaissance platform
- ZU-23 autocannon system (variant developed in conjunction with the CSIR)
- 14.5 mm anti-aircraft system
- Scorpion automated mortar systems (60 mm and 81 mm)
- 107 mm rocket system
- Drone operations base
The MAX Recon also supports the installation of various communication systems (for secure connectivity), command and control systems (for real-time co-ordination), electronic jamming systems (to disrupt hostile signals) and electronic warfare suites (for enhanced battlefield dominance). Future developments will expand the MAX Recon’s capabilities further, with plans to introduce a 120 mm mortar system and advanced anti-drone technologies, for instance.
RAPID RECONFIGURATION
The SVI MAX Recon has been specifically engineered with rapid reconfiguration in mind. Mission-specific adjustments can be made quickly and easily using basic hand tools and lifting equipment. This means the vehicle can be mobilised at short notice, even if requirements shift.
Built for fast reaction, the MAX Recon is combat ready and ideal for penetrating hostile terrain with confidence. In short, it is highly capable of sustaining operations with protection, firepower and endurance. No matter the mission profile, the MAX Recon is ready to deliver decisive capability.
