Johannesburg, November 2026 – Audi South Africa introduces the all-new Audi RS 5, marking a significant milestone for the brand with its first high-performance plug-in hybrid. Combining the distinctive character of a twin-turbocharged V6 with the immediate response of electric power, the RS 5 represents a bold expression of Vorsprung durch Technik, where electrification is engineered to elevate performance.
Available in both Sedan and Avant body styles, the all-new RS 5 takes its place among the halo models of the Four Rings. Its introduction further strengthens Audi South Africa's continued product offensive, building on the momentum of recent model introductions while showcasing the latest advancements in high-performance engineering, design and technology.
At the heart of the RS 5 is a clear engineering philosophy: electrification should do more than enhance efficiency. It should intensify performance. Through the integration of combustion and electric power, an advanced quattro drivetrain and sophisticated chassis technology, the RS 5 delivers an engaging driving experience that is as precise as it is powerful.
Electrification engineered for extraordinary performance
For the first time in an Audi RS production model, a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine is paired with an electric motor, producing a combined system output of 470 kW and 825 Nm of torque. This powerful combination propels the all-new RS 5 from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds.
The integration of electric power brings an additional dimension to the RS driving experience. By delivering immediate torque, the electric motor complements the V6 engine, sharpening throttle response and enhancing acceleration. The two power sources work in harmony to deliver the characteristic performance of Audi RS, with the added responsiveness and control made possible by hybrid technology.
Power is transmitted through an eight-speed tiptronic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive, ensuring confident power delivery and traction across a wide range of driving conditions.
The plug-in hybrid system incorporates a lithium-ion battery with a usable capacity of 22 kWh, enabling an electric driving range of between 78 and 84 kilometres. This allows the RS 5 to combine its performance credentials with the ability to undertake everyday journeys using electric power alone.
AC charging capability of up to 11 kW provides convenient charging at home or compatible public charging points, extending the practicality of the plug-in hybrid powertrain. However, charging of the battery is also possible through intelligent recouperation technology.
The times during which the driver doesn’t have their foot on the throttle are of major importance to the plug-in hybrid’s efficiency. Energy recovery (recouperation) is controlled depending on the selected gear in accordance with a pre-defined deceleration rate. In addition, automatic recouperation can be activated via the MMI. It lets the vehicle vary regeneration automatically.
While the RS 5 is moving under electric power, the regen rate can be adjusted during coasting in three stages using the paddles on the steering wheel – just like on the all-electric models. The new RS 5 has two operating modes: “EV” and “Hybrid.” In EV mode, the high-performance model relies solely on electric propulsion. Besides automatic operation in Hybrid mode, a preferred state of charge for the battery can be selected using a digital slider, meaning users have full control over how far the battery is charged.
Full power is available at the push of a button thanks to the boost function. Press it, and the performance hybrid deploys maximum acceleration for ten seconds – perfect for quick overtakes. When the function is activated, the gearbox selects the perfect gear to ensure instant, direct, and dynamic acceleration. A countdown in the driver information display shows how much of the ten seconds of boost remains. Afterwards, the system returns to the previously selected driving mode. Indeed, the function can be triggered while any drive select mode is active. When the boost button is pressed during all-electric driving, the 2.9-litre V6 TFSI engine is instantly ready to offer the car’s full power potential. At the same time, the exhaust valves open for an extra emotional sound experience.
With an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h as standard, the RS 5 delivers formidable performance. For customers seeking an even more focused expression of Audi RS design and engineering, the optional Audi Sport package includes a sportier bumper design, while also increasing the electronically limited top speed to 285 km/h.
quattro reimagined: A new dimension of driving dynamics
Beyond its impressive power output, the all-new RS 5 introduces a significant advancement in how performance is delivered.
At the centre of its dynamic capabilities is a completely new quattro drivetrain with Dynamic Torque Control, featuring the world's first electromechanical torque vectoring system at the rear axle of a production vehicle.
This advanced technology enables exceptionally precise distribution of torque between the rear wheels, continuously adapting to driving conditions and driver inputs. By actively influencing how power is delivered, the system enhances cornering agility, traction and stability, allowing the RS 5 to respond with remarkable precision and composure.
Working in conjunction with the drivetrain is a bespoke RS sport suspension system featuring twin-valve shock absorbers. Engineered to deliver an exceptionally broad range of driving characteristics, the suspension combines the responsiveness and control demanded during dynamic driving with the composure required for everyday use.
Through Audi drive select, drivers can tailor the vehicle's character to their preferences, with driving modes that include balanced, dynamic and RS sport. An additional RS torque rear mode is designed for controlled driving environments and is approved exclusively for use on closed courses.
Together, these technologies demonstrate Audi Sport's approach to performance, where power, agility and precision work in harmony to create a more engaging connection between driver and vehicle.
Distinctively RS: Design with presence and purpose
The all-new Audi RS 5 makes its performance credentials immediately apparent through an exterior design that is both commanding and sophisticated.
Its muscular proportions, sculpted surfaces and RS-specific detailing create a powerful visual identity, while retaining the precision and elegance that define Audi design. Compared to the base model A5, it has been widened by four centimetres on either side both front and rear.
A striking front end, characterised by a distinctive Singleframe grille and purposeful air intakes, establishes an assertive presence. Pronounced body contours flow towards the rear, where RS-specific design elements reinforce the vehicle's sporting character. The RS exhaust system’s tips are centrally positioned and have matte oval tailpipes. In a nod to the motorsport heritage of the RS 5, a red reflector is vertically placed in the centre of the diffuser.
Both the Sedan and Avant express this design philosophy through their individual silhouettes. The Sedan presents a sleek, athletic profile, while the Avant combines the same performance-focused design language with the practicality and versatility of an estate body style.
Standard exterior equipment includes Gloss Black RS detailing, black exterior mirror housings, an RS sport exhaust system and 20-inch Audi Sport five-Y-spoke alloy wheels in Platinum Grey. Darkened Matrix LED headlights with dynamic light sequencing and dynamic turn signals further enhance the vehicle's visual identity and also include an RS-specific signature, while LED rear lights pro provide a highly distinguishing feature from the rear.
For customers seeking a more individual expression of RS design, a selection of optional 21-inch Audi Sport alloy wheels is available in finishes including Platinum Grey Matte, Black Metallic and Neodymium Gold Matte.
The optional Audi Sport package introduces more assertive RS bumpers and additional performance-focused design elements, while optional Gloss Carbon and Matte Carbon Camouflage styling packages provide further opportunities for exterior personalisation.
The Matte Carbon Camouflage finish, inspired by materials used in the supercar segment, features a composite structure formed from individual carbon-fibre fragments, giving each component a unique appearance.
