Johannesburg, South Africa, 31 March 2026 – Think Indiana Jones with better navigation and a Jeep® Wrangler Rubicon instead of a horse for this epic journey of a lifetime… Overlander and owner Waleed Al Shamsi’s journey across Africa is the kind of real-world adventure that earns attention because it happened the hard way, on rough roads, through remote places, with the Jeep Wrangler doing exactly what it says on the tin.

Travelling from his home base in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) halfway around the world through Africa and into South Africa, Al Shamsi has taken on the sort of route that quickly strips a vehicle-based overlanding story of any fluff.

He’s driven through deep mud in Uganda and Zambia, crossed the soft dunes of the Namib Desert, tackled broken rocky roads in Ethiopia and Angola, and covered long highway stretches in South Africa, where dependability mattered just as much as off-road ability.

His Jeep Wrangler Rubicon has also been set up for long-distance overlanding, carrying camping equipment, water storage and a dual-battery system for life on the road.

For Al Shamsi, the appeal was never about ticking countries off a list. It was about seeing Africa properly – from the ground, at road level, with all the unpredictability and beauty that comes with it.

“I’ve always believed the best way to see the world isn’t from a plane, but from the ground, crossing borders and meeting people where they live. Africa is incredibly diverse in its landscapes, cultures and challenges, and I wanted to prove that with the right mindset and the right vehicle, it could be done,” Al Shamsi says.

Al Shamsi’s endeavours are a great tale of adventures more than just brand pride

Janus Janse van Rensburg, Head of Product and Marketing at Jeep South Africa, a Stellantis South Africa brand, says: “Waleed’s story is important because it shows the Jeep brand in the kind of environment that built the brand’s reputation in the first place. It’s a great reminder that capability isn’t something you can claim from behind a desk. It’s something people recognise when a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon takes on demanding terrain, long distances and the unpredictability that comes with a journey like this.”

That’s the kind of story that matters to Jeep South Africa; as a brand built on the idea of getting out there, kicking up some dust and finding out what’s around the next turn. Al Shamsi’s African trek gives that spirit a fresh, credible chapter.

It also brings the Jeep brand motto of ‘Go Anywhere, Do Anything’ to life in a way that no brochure ever can. Overlanding through Africa certainly is a ‘Challenge Accepted’ on Al Shamsi’s further adventure around the world, showing the Jeep brand’s authentic off-road capability, adventure and lifestyle-led ownership.

South Africa fits into the story

South Africans have a deep love for overlanding, camping, backroads travels and outdoor escapes, and Al Shamsi says Cape Town, Chapman’s Peak, the Kruger region and the hospitality he encountered made South Africa one of the most memorable legs of his trip.

Janse van Rensburg says: “Owners often become the most convincing voices for the brand because they use their vehicles in real life, not ideal conditions. That’s why a journey like this speaks to community, advocacy and the kind of Jeep ownership experience that inspires other people to get out and make their own stories.”

Al Shamsi’s African crossing closes one chapter of his journey and opens another as he travels on to South America next, so for any South Africans who felt a little travel itch reading this, that’s probably the point. Adventure doesn’t always need a grand plan. Sometimes it starts with a capable vehicle, a bit of nerve and the decision to see what’s out there.
