Hermanus Runner Wins Stylish Car at SPAR Women’s Race

Cape Town, 30 March 2026.  Sometimes the biggest wins do not just come from crossing the finish line, instead, from what is awaiting on the other side.

That was the reality for Melanie Raaf from Hermanus who participated ‘just for run’ at the SPAR Women’s Challenge at Green Point Stadium in Cape Town yesterday.  In a Hyundai Automotive South Africa-sponsored lucky-draw, Raaf was announced as the winner of a brand-new Hyundai EXTER valued at R269,900.

“I came here just to run and be part of something positive with other women but never imagined I would leave with a car,” she said.  “I came to the race as a commuter this morning and I am now a proud owner of this beautiful EXTER.  It is a truly life-changing moment and I am so grateful to Hyundai!”

The race attracted a record 18,000 women participants and celebrated healthy lifestyles, fitness and sisterhood.  Participants completed either 5km or 10km, with both distances highlighting the growing role of mass participation events in promoting healthier lifestyles.

“Seeing thousands of women unite around health, fun and wellness is incredibly inspiring,” said Gcina Mahonga, Western Cape Regional Manager at Hyundai Automotive South Africa.  “Handing over the Hyundai EXTER keys to a very jubilant Melanie while witnessing her joy is what we strive to do each day at Hyundai…to delight and create great memories to consumers through our vehicles.”

With its fuel-conscious efficiency, the Hyundai EXTER reflects a comfortable and enjoyable driving experience.  At a time when consumers are increasingly mindful of cost of ownership, this vehicle’s fuel frugality makes it ideal for daily commutes including work, schools runs as well as family getaway trips.

“Today’s consumers are looking for smarter ways to manage their finances,” said Stanley Anderson, CEO of Hyundai Automotive South Africa.  “The Hyundai EXTER offers a balance of fuel efficiency, low running costs and everyday usability.”

On the competitive front, Tayla Kavanagh secured her first victory in a SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge in a time of 31:33, followed closely by last year’s defending champion, Glenrose Xaba in 31:38.  The third place went to Kyla Jacobs with a career-best time of 32:16.

With thousands of participants and spectators, the Cape Town race generates millions of rand in tourism, hospitality and retail activities.
