South Africans Embrace Online Car Buying as Hyundai Hits Record Digital Sales
Johannesburg, 09 April 2026. Hyundai Automotive South Africa has recorded its strongest month yet for online vehicle sales, a new high for the initiative since its launch.
The company recorded 110 vehicles sold through its Digital Dealer platform in March 2026, marking the first time it has exceeded the 100-unit mark since launching the initiative in December 2024. The achievement pushes total digital sales to 974 vehicles nationwide, signalling consumer shift in car-buying.
A key feature is Hyundai’s WhatsApp channel, where customers interact with Hana, an AI-powered assistant that guides them through the finance application process. Once finalized, customers can take delivery at their nearest Hyundai dealership, supported by a network of 97 dealerships nationwide.
“This result reflects a clear shift in how South Africans are choosing to buy cars,” said Stanley Anderson, CEO of Hyundai Automotive South Africa. “Digital platforms are making the process faster, simpler and customers are responding positively.”
According to Johan Nel, Sales Director at Hyundai Automotive South Africa the focus has been on simplifying what has traditionally been a complex process.
“Customers want convenience and flexibility,” said Nel. “Being able to apply for finance and secure a vehicle via WhatsApp or online gives them total control, without the need to spend hours in a showroom.”
For the company’s Digital Sales Team, the shift is already evident in customer behaviour. Top-performing Dealer Agent for the month of March with a total of 17 vehicles sold, Nokubonga Nene, said the platform is resonating strongly with customers.
“Customers enjoy the speed, ease of the process and many are surprised by how easy it is especially on WhatsApp,” she said. “From applying for finance on WhatsApp to collecting their car, the process is efficient and a much more streamlined experience compared to traditional car-buying.”
The trend is in line with global shifts in automotive retail. For the majority of buyers, the ability to move from enquiry to finance approval via their smartphone is now becoming a key differentiator.
With digital adoption continuing to rise, Hyundai Automotive South Africa’s Digital Dealer is set to play an increasingly important role in how South Africans shop for cars.
